Top Self-Storage Moments In Film And Television

By    October 29, 2012

1.  Breaking Bad, Season 5, Episode 8, “Gliding Over All” (2012)
Although many viewers were disappointed to see AMC split Season 5 into two halves, few can refute the fact that the first half finale was a juggernaut. With so much illicit money coming into her car wash, Sklyer can’t launder all of Walt’s cash without arousing suspicion, so she does what any quick-thinking criminal would; she rents a self-storage unit.

2.  Storage Wars, (2010 – present)
No list would be complete without Storage Wars; however, we at SpareFoot know that calling storage auction shows “reality” TV is definitely a misnomer.

3.  Esposito, (2011)
After winning his dream girl’s storage locker at auction, a young man uses its contents to win her affection. Shot on location in Charlotte, NC, Esposito is a feature-length romantic comedy— a genre not commonly associated with storage.

4.  Blood Shed, (Release date TBD)
Although Patrick Hasson’s Blood Shed is still in development, it’s sure to be great horror film, as the script was selected as a quarter finalist in the prestigious Nicholl Screenwriting Fellowship back in 2010. As an interesting aside, Hasson found inspiration for the screenplay while living in a Los Angeles self-storage unit for three months.

5.  M, (1931)
Utilizing sound for the first time, Austrian writer-director Fritz Lang took audiences by storm with his 1931 thriller M, a film that would go on to become a benchmark for all serial killer movies. Still relevant today, M paved the way for films like Se7en, Zodiac, and Silence of the Lambs. To prepare for the film, Lang spent eight days inside a mental institution interviewing child murderers. In a climactic scene near the end of the film, the serial killer Hans Beckert is finally caught— hiding inside a storage unit.

6.  Dexter, Season 6, Episode 3,  “Smokey and the Bandit” (2011)
Suspecting that Walter Kenny may be the “Tooth Fairy” serial killer, Dexter surreptitiously follows him into a self-storage facility. Inside the creepy old man’s storage unit, Dexter finds the evidence he needs— a collection of teeth.

Although Dexter is set in Miami, the self-storage scenes were shot at Long Beach Stor-All in Long Beach, California. Apparently, a great deal of the show is actually filmed in southern California.

7.  Silence of the Lambs, (1991)
After Dr. Hannibal Lecter tells Detective Starling to “look deep within yourself,” the Detective begins to realize that Hannibal has a storage locker in Baltimore. From the script:

  • 00:22:23 I thought the “yourself” reference was too hokey for Lecter,
  • 00:22:27 so I figured he’s from Baltimore and I looked in the phone book
  • 00:22:31 and there’s a “Your Self” storage facility right outside of downtown Baltimore, sir.
  • 00:22:40 Unit 31 was leased for ten years, pre-paid in full.
  • 00:22:46 The contract is in the name of a Miss Hester Mofet.

When she arrives at “Your Self Storage,” Starling breaks into the unit and finds mannequins, among other creepy items.

8.  Self Storage, (2013)
Shot in Providence, RI, Tom DeNucci’s upcoming horror film Self Storage features industry heavyweights Eric Roberts and Michael Berryman. The film hits theaters this spring.

9. Self Storage, (2010 – 2011)
Executive produced by Lance Watkins, Self Storage is a popular web series about two women, Dana (Julie Mann) and Shoshanna (Kimberly Trew), who turn to self-storage as a solution to their recent bout with homelessness.

10. Homeland, Season 1, Episode 8, “Achilles Heel” (2011)
Much to the dismay of CIA officer Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes), former Prisoner of War Tom Walker uses a self-storage unit to engage in clandestine activity.
