30 seconds

[ by Amanda Hopkins, CORT Furniture ]

We live in a world that runs at top speed. Instant gratification comes in all forms, be it on TV, online or via smartphones. While we have yet to harness the “Beam me up, Scotty” travel technology of the Starship Enterprise’s transporter, there are plenty of other things you can do in a snap … and some of them might surprise you. Here are 11 things you can do in 30 seconds or less.

1. Perform a Concert.
In an attempt to claim the “Guinness Book of World Records” title for the “World’s Shortest Concert,” musicians Meg and Jack White of The White Stripes held a one-note show in 2007 in Newfoundland, Canada. Jack picked up his red electric guitar, Meg sat behind her peppermint-colored drum kit and the duo wailed for just a single second. Unfortunately, the crowd’s chants of “One more note!” went unfulfilled, and the “Guinness Book of World Records” ultimately denied White’s request. A sad day for rock ’n’ roll.

2. Run 200 Meters.
OK, you probably can do this one only if you’re an Olympic athlete, but you still can try. U.S. Olympic athlete Florence Griffith-Joyner ran 200 meters in 21.34 seconds at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.

3. Cure Your Hiccups.
Apparently, a shot of apple cider vinegar will cure your hiccups. Although the evidence for this hiccup home remedy is anecdotal, anything is worth a try when fighting chronic hiccups, right?

4. Do 41 “Bunny Hops” on a BMX Bike.
A “bunny hop” is simply jumping a bike’s front and back wheels off the ground at the same time. Easier to describe than to do? Yes, indeed. Brian Ventura rose to the challenge in 2009 at the 15th X Games in L.A., where he performed 41 bunny hops in 30 seconds, earning a place in the “Guinness Book of World Records” for “Most Bunny Hops in 30 Seconds.”

5. Fail Spectacularly at Twister.
For the coordination-challenged among us, Twister can be a dangerous game. The truly talented will fail at Twister on the very first go, but those working harder might maintain balance a little longer. But beware, better players. The clumsy ones will take you right down with them.

6. Watch Four Vine Videos.
Vine is Twitter’s app that lets you record and post short video clips from your smartphone. How short? Just a measly 6 seconds. Of course, Vine users have risen to the challenge to fit stop-motion sequences, dance routines and instructional videos (think “How Not to Eat String Cheese”) into the allotted time. Each video loops endlessly, so while you could watch four Vine videos in less than 30 seconds, you just as easily could watch the same video four times.

7. Make 72 Million Red Blood Cells.
This amazing feat requires no effort! Your body produces about 72 million red blood cells every 30 seconds. And that’s a good thing. These bad boys deliver oxygen to your entire body by circulating it from your lungs to your capillaries.

8. Listen to the Song “Embryo” by Black Sabbath.
Featured on the album “Master of Reality,” Black Sabbath’s instrumental song “Embryo” clocks in at 28 seconds. Jam to this heavy-metal hiccup between the tunes “After Forever” and “Children of the Grave.”

9. Make a Microwave Sponge Cake in a Mug.
With a little ingenuity, it seems you can make almost anything in a microwave oven these days. Pastry chef Albert Adria conceived of a sponge cake recipe that, when made in an iSi food whipper and aerated with nitrogen, comes out of the microwave perfectly spongy and cake-y in just 30 seconds.

10. Locate Self-Storage.
Yup, just a couple of quick clicks and you can be on your way to renting a storage unit in your city. With the aid of SpareFoot’s self-storage finder, simply type in your ZIP code, click on “View Prices,” and up come the results for storage units available to rent in your area. Clicking on the facility name will show details about unit sizes, prices and reviews.

11. Find Furniture Rental.
It’s just as easy to find rental furniture online. CORT Furniture Rental lets you find pricing and availability by searching by city or ZIP code and your desired lease term. Click “Enter” and … voilà! Rent by the room or by the piece, or find whole-home packages. Never thought you could dream up home décor in 30 seconds, did you?

Thanks for the reminder regarding Black Sabbath’s song. I have a concert in Austin to attend for B. Sabbath.
