Fresh off a successful Kickstarter campaign, Florida comic book writer Wes Locher is launching his self-storage-themed comic book series, “Unit 44.” With its tagline–“Area 51. Storage Units. Conspiracy. Humor”–the comic book piqued our interest immediately.

As Locher describes it on Kickstarter, “Unit 44″ answers this question: “What happens when Area 51 employees Agent Gibson and Agent Hatch forget to pay the rent on the facility’s off-site storage unit, and the super-secret contents are sold at public auction?” Locher adds: “When an alien invasion threatens the safety of planet Earth, Gibson and Hatch must recover an item from the locker if they hope to stop the extraterrestrial threat.”

In addition to the 105 backers who contributed $2,753 on fundraising website Kickstarter, support has come directly from self-storage professionals. “Self-storage managers have tenants who are storing comics in their units, and they’re really excited about the prospect of sharing the project,” Locher said. Not long ago, a self-storage manager in San Antonio gave Locher some cash and pre-ordered copies of the comic book for a few of his tenants.

The first “Unit 44″ issue, which is 22 pages long, will be available via digital delivery and print in a few months. The entire four-issue, 88-page project already has been written, and the art is being drawn by Eduardo Jimenez. “Ed nailed exactly what I wanted,” Locher said.

Although the project has been described as PG-rated, Locher is reluctant to concur.

“A lot of people think this is going to be a family-friendly book,” Locher said. “I didn’t envision it that way initially. I saw it more as AdultSwim fare.”

That being said, the book won’t contain profanity–at least not explicitly. “I’m gonna go with the old-school @’s and $’s, but the humor will be catered to adults,” Locher said.

Before it’s even become available to the public, “Unit 44″ has attracted the attention of the folks over at A&E’s “Storage Wars.” The “Storage Wars” producers and Lochner are planning a way to tie “Unit 44″ into “Storage Wars.” Lochner already has the rights to use some of the names of some of the “Storage Wars” personalities in “Unit 44.” And without giving too much away, Lochner said: “The people from the show may find their way into the pages, depending on how it shakes out.”

Either way, over here at SpareFoot, we’re excited to read it. Here’s a sneak peek at the first five pages.
