Austin progressive rock-fusion band Groove Think is on a roll.
On March 7, the band performed at The SpareFoot Party as the prize for winning our first-ever Battle of the Storage Bands contest. The trio also is playing two other Austin shows during South by Southwest—Touche on March 12 and Shiner’s Saloon on March 13.
And as if that weren’t enough, Groove Think is working on its third full-length album, set for release late this summer or early this fall.
“2014 has been a great year for us,” said Frederick Jones, vocalist and lead guitarist for Groove Think.
Other members of the Austin band are Michael Darling (drums) and Corey Isaacks (bass and vocals). Jones and Isaacks are the group’s primary songwriters.
Every group that entered the Battle of the Storage Bands had to submit a video of a practice in a storage unit. To be honest, Groove Think routinely practices in a garage, not a storage unit. But Groove Think actually rehearsed in a storage unit for the group’s video submission. (We won’t tell anyone.)
Groove Think’s Frederick Jones
Perhaps the Battle of the Storage Bands victory will propel Groove Think to bigger shows at bigger venues. For now, though, the band is concentrating mostly on wrapping up its next album.
As the band—together for 3½ years—continues to write songs for that album, the members are drawing upon inspirations like The Mars Volta, Rush, Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Pink Floyd and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
“We’re really trying to push the boundaries of our music style and genre by employing odd time signatures, frequent modulations and experimental sounds,” Jones said. “One thing both Corey and I are sure about is we want the album to be aggressive, explosive and musically fresh.”
Once the songs are finished, the band plans to produce a demo, create a Kickstarter fundraising campaign and record the album professionally. Jones said Groove Think “would really, really love” to get signed by a small record label to help distribute the album. Then, Groove Think hopes to begin touring and “make this our full-time job,” Jones said.
Don’t forget about SpareFoot when you hit the big time, Groove Think. Perhaps we could score some VIP concert tickets?
