SpareFoot Survey: One in Six Americans Moved in Past Year

AUSTIN, TX–According to a survey commissioned by self-storage marketplace SpareFoot, one in six American adults (16 percent) moved within the past 12 months, with 57 percent of those movers relocating to homes just 25 miles away or less. The most common reason for relocating was to settle into a bigger or better home (18 percent), and the second most popular reason was moving for work (15 percent). Both of those statistics point to positive economic movement.

This suspicion was confirmed when we opened last week’s Reading Eagle and discovered Penske’s Gregory Smith sporting an industrial-strength chain and a SpareFoot wristband.

SpareFoot, A History: Our Tech Startup Over The Years

Before leaving to study abroad in Singapore his junior year, Chuck realized he would need storage space for his furniture and other belongings. A traditional storage unit would cost hundreds of dollars— his dad pointed out that rent on the unit would cost more than the worth of its contents. He ended up storing his stuff in spare closets and garages of friends, including that of best friend and future co-founder, Mario. An idea was born.
